The Royal Opera House are creating the world's first 'Twopera' - an opera devised entirely out of user submitted tweets on twitter. Not to fear though as the whole Opera won't be confined to 140 characters. The experiment kicked off on August 3rd and those who wanted to contribute had to include with @youropera in their tweet. The Opera, which will run on September 5th and 6th, will not be performed in its entirely but instead in excerpts by two performers around a piano in the Paul Hamlyn Hall.
The story, which starts, "One morning, very early, a man and a woman were standing, arm-in-arm, in London’s Covent Garden. The man turned to the woman and he sang…" already includes kidnapping birds and a potion making woman with no name. It is certainly going to be an opera with a difference.
The ROH blog, where you can keep updated with the storyline, says they have created the opera as they are, "investigating how short, 140-character contributions can build upon each other to create a non-linear narrative – like a Choose Your Own Adventure story or a game of Consequences."
So if you want to be part of this world's first you have up until September 3rd to contribute to the libretto, and yes I had to look that up.
